GODDESS SERIES
The Goddesses are, for me, about process and emergence. The pieces are formed in clay, the most basic element of earth and are built up, layer by layer, around a steel rod for inner strength and centering. They begin upside down , so that as I work, the sense of form and movement in space begin to evolve. Next several Goddesses are placed in the kiln, subjected to the fire and, as the temperature rises, the clay begins to move, bend , and dance as they turn to stone.
There is a primal force occurring as the forms emerge from the clay. I feel they are growing from the earth both metaphorically and visually. Growth is both personal and physical. In a group, they dance and relate to each other as they tower into space. A relationship between the Goddesses develops.
The titles have Greek references. The forms seem to have a classical stance with their draped surfaces and names. 'Siren' refers to the Greek Goddesses who beckoned Ulysses and his sailors to the rocky shores with their beautiful songs. Action, movement and seduction are their characteristics. 'Muse', the title of another group of Goddesses, means both inspiration and contemplation. They seem to be guiding geniuses who, in Greek mythology, ruled over poetry and song. They refer simultaneously to pondering and deep thought.
