CARYATIDES II
Installation
Stoneware and Stones
These 5 towers refer to the ancient statuary of the Goddesses employed
to support the weight of a building. Archeological in nature, they reference
the female columns on the Temple of Athena in the Parthenon in Ancient
Athens, Greece. They also recall the endless columns of Constantine Brancusi.
Stones from the river beds and mountain tops of Colorado, and the pebbles
from the sandy beaches of Florida are imbedded in the surface of this
work. After the piece is formed by hand, built up layer by layer, it is
fired in a large kiln fueled by gas, at temperatures of Approx.imately
2100degrees F. The Stones bubble and burst as they go through the metamorphic
process of the heat of the kiln. They change from hardened bits of copper
green and magnesium red Stones to hardened black rock. After the work
emerges from the kiln it is stacked in layers, upon a steel rod. Plate
techtonics, volcanic movement, folds and emergence, cracks, explosions
are represented in these forms.
At a height of between 10 to 12 feet each, the Caryatides are just over
human scale. Together, the installation creates an environment that encourages
you to walk among. The space between these totems gives one the feeling
of monumentality, of protectiveness, of being close and in tune with the
spirituality of nature.
